Sail Boat Sails
Different types of sail boat sails are available in the industry. It is a device used to get the power from wind and direct the boat in right direction. Sail boat sails are made of different types of fabrics such as nylon, carbon fiber and canvas. You can also make it in other materials depending upon your needs.
There are three different kinds of sail boat sails namely main sail, head sail and spinnaker. The main sail is used to operate the boat. As the name implies, this is the main part of sail boat sails. There is a mast which is the vertical support and boom horizontal support for main sail. Main sail is the source of speed and power. It is also used to steer the boat. This main sail is always kept in the same position. However, if the wind force is vigorous, it may be folded and replaced by trysail which is much smallest of all sail boat sails. Folding the main sail is called as reefing.
When you want to go against the direction of the wind, you should set head sail. The wind condition here is called as upwind. When you want to sail away from the direction of the wind, you need spinnaker, which is helpful in downwind. In these two sail boat sails, there are two types of head sails. They are called as jib and Genoa. Jib is used in high winds and Genoa is used in low winds. The difference between these sail boat sails is, jib does not overlap the main sail while Genoa does. Genoa is larger than jib and both these sail boat sails are very helpful in steering your boat in right direction in various types of winds.
Spinnaker is available in different shapes and sizes and this is the largest of all sail boat sails. It creates a balloon like shape and is extended to the front portion of the boat. This feature helps you to drive your boat fast and highly effective in downwind that is when you want to sail away from the direction of the wind. Among various types of sail boat sails, symmetrically shaped spinnakers work best when the wind movement is from the back of the boat and asymmetrical spinnakers are useful when the wind blows from one particular angle. Keep these things in your mind when you buy sail boat sails, either new or used one.
